Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, who fought in the Battle of Trafalgar off the coast of Spain, was given the name Collingwood. Until the late 1980s, the town was known for its shipyards and shipbuilding facilities.

Golfers can choose from a variety of courses in Collingwood and just outside of town. Cranberry Golf Course, which is part of the Cranberry Golf Resort, has 18 holes set between lush trees. The resort features golf lessons, dining options, housing, and a range of activities and tournaments. The 18-hole Blue Mountain Golf and Country Club features a pro shop and on-site dining. The course was built in 1964 and is the oldest in the region. Sunset Point Beach, on the Georgian Bay coast, is situated in the northern part of town and features a sandy beach, walking paths, greenspace, picnic areas, a concession area, and outdoor public art. An arboretum, walking paths, a pergola, benches, a fishing area, soccer fields, treed areas, and greenspace can all be found at Harbourview Park, which is also situated in the town's northern part.

The Simcoe County District School Board or the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board run the majority of the schools in the city. Collingwood's only post-secondary option is Georgian College, but residents may also attend Academy of Learning College, CTS Canadian Career College, or Liaison College in neighbouring communities.
